Don’t Let Sunrays Damage Your Eyes

April 29, 2024

Lots of people aren’t aware of all of the numerous ways that the sun’s UV (ultraviolet) rays can harm their eyesight. Even worse, many people do know that UV rays can harm their eyesight yet take no protective measures.

Whether it’s time for a checkup, a new pair of contact lenses or an eyeglass prescription, South Florida Eye Health is here to help. Your care and comfort are our top priorities. We will take the time to address your every concern and explain your options in care.

UV radiation can damage many parts of your eyes, from the ocular surface (the outer layer of the cornea, the tears, the conjunctiva and the margin of the eyelids) down to the lens. You must protect your peepers from the sun’s UV rays. Wearing sunglasses with lenses that protect you from UV rays and sun glare is your first and easiest line of defense.

These are some of the afflictions you want to avoid.

Photokeratitis: It can happen after having been out in the sun for a lengthy amount of time. The result is a temporary loss of vision that lasts six to 24 hours.

Cataracts: They cloud your eyes’ lenses. The cloudiness happens slowly and over an extended period. You may not realize that they’re forming. Fortunately, a short surgical procedure can remove the veil.

Eye cancer and tumors: The potentially deadly disease and other irregular developments can affect your eyes in a variety of locations. They include:

  • The vitreous, which is the gel-like liquid that fills the eyeball and gives it its round shape. It’s full of minute fibers that attach to your retina (the light-sensitive cover of tissue at the rear of the eye).
  • The conjunctiva, which is the thin, transparent tissue that overlays and protects the sclera and slim-but-tough cornea; it covers the eyes’ façade and attaches the eye to the underside of the eyelids.
  • The structures inside your eyelid, which include muscles and glands.

At the office of South Florida Eye Health, our skilled staff provides the highest quality eye care in a relaxed, comfortable setting. Consistent exams by an ophthalmologist are imperative to monitoring the health of your eyes. Please call us today to schedule an appointment.
